Bettaway Supply Chain Services entered the electric vehicle space with the introduction of two all-electric yard tractors Sept. 26 to support its logistics operations in New Jersey.

The new Orange EV battery-electric yard switching tractors are specialized units that maneuver trailers around facilities and yards. They will be replacing diesel counterparts. Bettaway uses the yard tractors to support the operations at an Arizona Beverage Co. production facility.

“The EV units have been performing flawlessly; the drivers enjoy the smooth quiet ride as well as no more exhaust fumes, which were an issue with the diesel units,” said John Vaccaro, president of Bettaway. “This is one of several steps we are taking to introduce EV units to different parts of our operations.”

Bettaway provides supply chain services to the beverage and consumer packaged goods industries, including pallet recycling and managing sustainable pallet networks. It began focusing on sustainability initiatives in 2008 by spec’ing its lightweight trucks and trailers to improve fuel efficiency. But in the years since, the company has also been upgrading its fleet with route planning software and automatic transmissions to further improving fuel economy.

The new electric yard tractors can operate for nearly 24 hours before having to charge. The units also take less than two hours to charge. They have ceramic solar tinting on the cab windows to protect drivers from heat and ultraviolet ray exposure. Arizona designed a custom paint job for the units that promotes its flagship iced tea product.
