he Department of Energy said Monday the average retail price of diesel fuel in the United States declined 0.5 cent to $1.476 per gallon.
This marked the third consecutive weekly fall in the price of commercial trucking's dominant fuel. It has dropped 2.6 cents since increasing 7.3 cents over the prior four weeks.
The 2.6-cent decline would save a trucker $5.20 on a 200-gallon purchase at retail pumps.
DOE also said Monday the average price for regular unleaded gasoline fell 3.1 cents to $1.504 a gallon, the lowest level since $1.489 on July 7.
About one-third of commercial trucking uses gasoline. The decline was the 10th in the past 11 weeks.
The price of diesel fell in all of its geographic regions with the exception of DOE's West Coast grouping of states, where it rose 0.3 cent to $1.579.
The steepest decline was 1.1 cents in Midwest, to $1.467.
Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel-filling stations to compile a national snapshot price of diesel.
