ATA Says Limiting Truck Speeds May Require Federal Mandate

he safety director of American Trucking Associations — which recently called for factory-installed speed governors on large trucks — said requiring the use of governors would probably need a government mandate.

In February, ATA endorsed a policy to limit the speed of commercial trucks to 68 miles per hour through the factory installation of speed governors on the engines. (Click here for previous story.)

“There doesn’t seem to be anybody in-between on this one,” said Dave Osiecki, vice president of safety and security operations for ATA.



siecki told Transport Topics the “only way” to enforce the use of speed governors “is through either federal law or regulation.” But he said ATA would initially “have a dialogue with the industry and with the truck manufacturers and see how far we can go in advance of [legislation].”
