Asphalt Pavement Alliance Salutes 8 State DOTs

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance recognized the departments of transportation in eight states with the 2015 Perpetual Pavement Award for their high quality, long-life asphalt pavements.

The awards are presented to state transportation departments and local agency road owners for pavement that’s at least 35 years old with proven high-quality structural design. To earn the award, the pavement must have not suffered a structural failure, and should have an average interval between resurfacing of more than 12 years.

“With asphalt pavements, resilience comes from a durable structure designed to provide long-term performance and drivability,” said Amy Miller, national director of the APA. “These sustainable, long-life pavements are built with layers that distribute stress efficiently to confine permanent distresses to the easily maintained top layer of the pavement.”

The winning DOTs are from Alabama (SR 133), Arkansas (U.S. 62), Florida (I-75/SR 93), Michigan (SR 20), Minnesota (SR 71), Pennsylvania (I-180), South Carolina (I-20) and Tennessee (U.S. 27/SR 29).

Perpetual Pavement Awards have been given out for 15 years and all of this year's DOTs are repeat winners, led by Minnesota with 14 awards. Tennessee has won 11, Alabama seven, Arkansas and Florida six each, Pennsylvania and South Carolina five each and Michigan three.

Engineers at the National Center for Asphalt Technology in Auburn, Alabama, evaluated the nominations and validated the results.
