Plan Calls for Cleaner Diesel Trucks

Alan Lloyd, chairman of the California State Air Resources Board, has requested a legislative proposal that would mandate a 90 percent reduction in particulate emissions and a 75 percent cut in nitrogen oxide emissions between now and 2007 for new trucks and certain other equipment powered by diesel engines. At a clean-air technology symposium, Lloyd said it is becoming possible to make trucks with close to no emissions.

Meanwhile, Carol Browner, administrator of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, says a detailed plan on diesel engines should be forthcoming from her agency within a few months. "Anyone who has ever driven behind a large truck already knows about the levels of harmful air pollution that can come out of the exhaust pipes. This strategy would reduce those emissions by more than 90 percent," she said.

She also says the EPA will soon be proposing a 90 percent reduction in diesel sulfur levels. Drastic cuts in sulfur content are necessary to work with the catalysts and filters being developed by enginemakers.

Heads of California's trucking industry state they will not back the proposed California emissions standards unless they also apply in the rest of the United States. Three-fifths of trucks working in California are registered out of state. Los Angeles Times (10/07/99) P. A1; Cone, Marla

    Overnite Sues Teamsters for Defamation

Overnite Transportation has filed a defamation suit against the Teamsters in a state court in Texas, claiming in the suit that union campaign literature made several false statements about the LTL carrier. The statements, according to the lawsuit, were that the National Labor Relations Board had decided that the carrier was guilty of breaking labor law many times, that the carrier had been on the receiving end of 1,000-plus NLRB complaints, and that Overnite had thus had to make payments totaling in the eight figures or higher.

In a state court in Virginia, the carrier filed a related defamation suit against David Cameron, a spokesman for the union, over things he said in a press release. PR Newswire (10/06/99)

Police Tag 108 Drivers on I-78 in Two Days

Pennsylvania State Police Troop L's information officer says 18 trucks were among the 94 vehicles that received speeding tickets on I-78 in Berks County on Saturday and Sunday, which saw stepped-up enforcement due to the many accidents on that stretch of the interstate. Last year saw eight crash deaths there, as has 1999 thus far. Following too closely was the reason for most of the 14 tickets issued for violations other than speeding.

Zero tolerance on I-78 is also the rule in Lehigh and Northampton counties, according to state police Troop M's commander, who also says the troop's truck-inspection team will be setting up checkpoints this month. Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.) (10/06/99) P. B2; Berg, Christian D.

    Wawa Strike Enters Third Day

Although Wawa Food Markets has replacement workers delivering to their stores during the current Teamsters strike, union trash collectors will not cross pickets at some of the stores. There is a 18-foot-long, 4-foot-high pile of trash bags at a Philadelphia Wawa location. The hurdles in the union's contract are over pension rights and Sunday overtime. "We're fighting for something we had in our contract for over 30 years," says Local 463 Secretary-Treasurer Bob Ryder. Pickets are always respected

TransForce Inc. has acquired Transport McGill, a TL carrier specializing in hauling air-freight containers and cross-border refrigerated freight. Transport McGill is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of TransForce but will remain independently run and keep the Transport McGill name. Canada NewsWire (10/06/99)
