More Border Help Sought at Bridge
With the opening of the Blue Water Bridge's second span set for Saturday, the Michigan Transportation Department wants twice as many immigration and customs officials as there currently are.The bridge connects Port Huron, Mich., and Sarnia, Ontario. On Friday, a spokesman for MDOT said it is expected there will be twice as many trucks crossing the bridge – 3 million annually – by 2006. The spokesman, Gary Naeyaert, predicted "serious backups at the Blue Water" if there are not twice as many agents to take care of the expected twice as many trucks.
Changes at FedEx
FedEx has put Daniel J. Mullally, who has been at the company since 1995 with a background in the less-than-truckload sector, in charge of the FedEx sales organization. He was brought on board as head of freight sales and was successful in improving the freight sales unit, which until then had not been performing up to par.Meanwhile, Vice President of Legal R. Stop Issuing Trucking Permits: Union
The Quebec Federation of Labor has asked Quebec not to give any licenses to new truckers as long as independent truckers' issues remain unresolved."There are too many players now on the ice," said Henri Masse, president of the QFL, which also wants the province to allow an association of independent truckers. Trucker Involved in Fatal Crash Given 42 Citations
A truck inspection by the New Mexico Motor Transportation Division found 42 citations against an owner-operator whose log truck lost its load in Espanola Oct. 19, causing the deaths of two women. Among the infractions was no yearly inspection, which is required by federal rules, as well as bald tires and bad brakes.The trucker, 63-year-old Chacon resident Howard Tate, said accident damage caused some of the violations. Others were minor, he said. The District Attorney's office has been given the inspection and the accident probe and will decide on possible charges. Associated Press (11/06/99)
Canadian Public Strongly Opposes Transport Canada Plan
According to Canadians for Responsible and Safe Highways, there is strong opposition among 83% of the Canadian public to Transport Canada's plan to allow truckers to work 84 hours a week rather than the 60-hour average cited by CRASH as current practice.The group says it was kept out of key talks on the new hours of service, even though it was supposed to be among the members of the committee to draft the rules. A Transport Canada scientific panel said the proposal, which was set for adoption as early as Sunday, would be hazardous as well, the group says. Canada NewsWire (11/06/99)
