Online Exchanges, 3PLs: Partners or Competitors?
Lazard Freres logistics analyst Greg Burns told an e-commerce conference last week that online transportation exchanges and third-party logistics providers currently appeal to different types of shippers, but the online exchanges will eventually have to decide whether to compete or cooperate with the 3PLs.At the conference held by the New York Roundtable of the Council of Logistics Management, Burns said the shippers most interested in e-commerce exchanges have low-volume and low-value freight, so the most important factor to them is price.
If they pick the latter option, they will have to broaden their service offerings, he said. Regardless of which option is chosen, said Burns, the online exchanges' shipper and carrier networks need to be enlarged substantially. Journal of Commerce (05/16/00) P. 16; Atkinson, Helen
Town Seeks to Stop Truck Tragedies
Responding to a fatal Friday accident in which a truck crashed into a video store, the Lambertville, N.J., City Council Monday passed a resolution urging that the state extend its ban on 102-inch-wide trucks using local roadways to cover all trucks.Other actions taken at the public meeting requested that the state cut the speed limit on nearby roadways, lower New Jersey Turnpike tolls to encourage truckers to use that road, and let municipalities enforce the truck prohibition.
The public hearing was attended by Hopewell Township and East Amwell Township officials who helped lead the drive to pass the truck ban last year; they were invited to the Monday meeting by Lambertville Mayor David Del Vecchio.
In the Friday accident, a 102-inch-wide truck went out of control as it came up to a traffic light on Route 179, hit three vehicles, went up an embankment, and crashed into the video store, according to police. Employee Joan Eschen, 54, was pinned behind the counter and later died at a hospital. Trenton Times Online (05/16/00); Fand, Beth E.

The British online logistics company e-Logistics and the global consultancy KPMG have entered into a joint marketing agreement that will partner KPMG's knowledge of supply-chain management with e-Logistics' e-commerce expertise. This is the first such agreement for Europe, following on the heels of three similar U.S. deals signed last month. In those deals, Ernst & Young partnered with Celarix, Arthur Andersen partnered with Ariba, and PricewaterhouseCoopers partnered with Commerce One.
KPMG's Graham Stevens says the partnership with e-Logistics will enable the companies to provide "Fourth Party Logistics" services - the phrase was created by Arthur Andersen to denote companies providing complete supply-chain management. Such services are in greater and greater demand among shippers, he said. Journal of Commerce (05/16/00) P. 12; Freudmann, Aviva
