Economy Grows a Surprisingly Strong 5.2%, But Inflation Meter Slows
In a report with implications for the future course of interest rates, the Commerce Department said Friday that the economy's growth pace hit a robust 5.2% in the second quarter, after 4.8% in the first three months of 2000.Private forecasters had guided the financial markets to expect a 3.7% pace, which would show the Federal Reserve's yearlong campaign of hiking rates to slow the economy was paying off.
Further complicating the picture, the report also showed a slowing in a closely watched quarterly inflation measure, so the stronger growth came while price pressures cooled. The price "deflator" rose at a 2.3% annual rate in the April-June period, down from the first quarter's 3.5%. Transport Topics
Frozen Food Express Makes Second Quarter Comeback Despite Negative Factors
The profitable quarter comes despite factors such as high fuel costs and a driver shortage that negatively affected operations. Company CEO Stoney Stubbs Jr. said that fuel surcharges helped but did not completely compensate for rising fuel prices.
Stubbs also said the driver shortage caused 3-4% of the company's fleet to be parked dur-ing the quarter. In an attempt to attract and retain qualified drivers, the company has implemented a new compensation package, Stubbs said. He also added that freight rates will have to rise to cover increasing costs.
