Firestone Will Recall Tires; Shares in Bridgestone Drop

Bridgestone Corp. has issued a recall of millions of its Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigates defects in the tires, Reuters reported Wednesday.

The recall, which will be concentrated in the southern states, comes after mounting consumer complaints over possible defects in the tires. Several incidents have been reported of treads peeling off the tires and investigators are looking at possible links to 46 road fatalities, the article said.

CBS MarketWatch.com also reported Wednesday that shares in Japan-based Bridgestone Corp., Firestone's parent company and also a maker of commercial truck tires, fell 8.2% after news of the recall. Transport Topics

Oil supplier Conoco Inc. is expected to be the first company to agree to supply the American Petroleum Exchange, a Web-based fuel purchasing system, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The American Petroleum Exchange will allow its customers to post fuel needs on-line and suppliers to bid their services. United Parcel Service announced Monday it looks to purchase 90 million gallons of fuel from the on-line service. Transport Topics

Maine Trucking Company Fined, Shut Down For Falsified Driver Logs

Portland, Maine-based Ameri-Cana Transport Inc. was fined $45,000 and agreed to get out of the trucking business after pleading guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to falsifying driver logs.

The Associated Press reported the trucking company, which had served Maine's seafood industry for 40 years, had stopped operations on July 22 and was liquidating its assets.

The discrepancies were found when authorities compared the driver logs with toll tickets, fuel receipts, dispatch records, shipping documents and payroll records. Ameri-Cana Transport's attorney told AP the company paid drivers per trip and ignored the falsified logs. Transport Topics

Freight delivery and logistics giant Con-Way Transportation Services, a subsidiary of CNF Inc., announced Wednesday it has added new e-commerce offerings to the company's website, www.con-way.com.

Registered shippers can now receive shipment price quotes on-line, and other users can access two new business summary reports, the company said.

Con-Way's site was recently named the top less-than-truckload carrier e-commerce site in a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter survey of shippers. Transport Topics

County Officials In Colorado Put 20-Year Hold On Beltway Project

Officials in Jefferson County, Colo., have voted to expand existing roads rather than complete a metro-area beltway, putting off that project for at least 20 years, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Rather than complete the Colorado 470 loop by completing the connection between the eastern and western sections in Jefferson County, officials voted to expand several streets and another state route in the county and to reserve the right of way for those roads and another state route for future considerations, the article said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation supports a freeway linking Colorado 470 to the Northwest Parkway, which will be completed in 2003, the AP said. Transport Topics
