Albany Looks to Become an Intermodal Hub for Port

A lucky coincidence allowed the port of Albany, 150 miles upriver from New York City, to beef up its intermodal capabilities, paving its way to become the likely first of the New York satellite facilities.

Foster Wheeler Energy Corp., a manufacturer of power plants and components based in Clinton, N.J., last April began shipping intermodal cargo from Albany to Los Angeles, there to be loaded on vessels bound for China.

The company had already been utilizing the port of Albany as a consolidation point since September 1998, when it began shipping components for a six-unit power plant to Yangcheng, China.
