Alabama Intrastate Trucks to be Tracked, Paper Says
Trucks operating only in Alabama will need to be registered by this summer as part of a program to track in-state commercial vehicles for the first time, the Birmingham News reported.
The paper said that by July 1, all large trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds must be registered with the state. The registration system would allow the state’s Department of Revenue to revoke the owner’s business license if the company has multiple unsafe vehicles, the paper reported.
According to the paper, the state has tried to track these intrastate trucks, but it wasn’t until this year when the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration agreed to fund the tracking system.
The lack of a intrastate tracking system, and the absence of a requirement for a federal registration has caused Alabama to become a dumping ground for unsafe trucks that cannot operate in other states, truck inspectors told the paper. Neighboring states like Florida and Georgia already have such tracking systems in place.
