edEx Corp., Northwest Airlines Corp. and Polar Air Corp. have received approval to add four additional cargo flights to China each week, Bloomberg reported last Friday.

The action will raise the number of weekly all-cargo flights between China and the United States to 83 from 72, Bloomberg said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the flights last Thursday after inviting carriers who already provide cargo service between the U.S. and China to apply in July, according to Bloomberg.

Although it qualified to apply, FedEx rival UPS Inc. elected not to seek approval for additional U.S.-China flights, Bloomberg said.

New flights can begin as soon as March 25, Bloomberg reported.
