Less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight System said Wednesday it has reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement with the Teamsters union on a new five-year labor pact.

The Teamsters said in a separate statement that the agreement binds ABF to the proposed 2008-2013 Teamsters National Freight Industry Standards and that the pact “will protect union members’ futures.”

The National Freight Industry Standards Agreement is currently being ratified by the union, both sides said.

Ballots are due Feb. 8, and Teamsters lead negotiator Tyson Johnson said he was urging members to approve it.

This new agreement will replace the National Master Freight Agreement which expires on March 31.

ABF is the largest subsidiary of Arkansas Best Corp., ranked No. 16 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
