The former CEO of Albertsons told a judge that rival Kroger was to blame for the failure of a planned $24.6 billion merger of the two largest U.S. grocery store chains.

Kroger has approximately 8,200 corporate employees, making this round of cuts one of the biggest in the company’s 143-year history.

The DOJ expanded its antitrust inquiry of the meatpacking industry by demanding information on surging beef prices from Amazon, Costco, Walmart and others.

Target is expanding the size of the grocery section by more than 20% in nearly 150 remodeled stores and more than 50% in 300 new locations, carving out additional space for fresh produce and trendy items.

The disappointing outlook suggests that competition is intensifying among food retailers to grab spending from cost-conscious consumers, raising the stakes for CEO Greg Foran to accelerate growth. 

Ocado suffered a major setback in November when its biggest customer, Kroger, said it would close three Ocado fulfilment centers.
