Outgoing Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration head Anne Ferro defended her agency’s regulations limiting the amount of time drivers are allowed to work, during what probably was her last appearance before Congress as the agency’s chief.

A federal appeals court ruled on July 9 that federal law does not exempt motor carriers from a California law requiring that they provide truck drivers no less than a 30-minute paid meal break when their work period is more than five hours.

The National Fraternal Order of Police this week endorsed suspending a federal truck-safety regulator’s new hours-of-service rules, a proposal Senators are expected to take up before the August recess.

Debate on an amendment to an expansive fiscal 2015 funding bill that would have rolled back a suspension to a rule limiting the time truckers can operate on roadways came to a halt June 19 after the Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate announced they could not agree on how to proceed with the bill.
