The EPA has approved a change regarding sensor requirements for diesel exhaust fluid systems in response to complaints from frustrated truck owners.

In early 2026, the primary parts-related issue for managers is cost containment, said Robert Braswell, TMC’s executive director.

Software overrides for diesel exhaust fluid sensors that are in perilously short supply are making their way from truck manufacturers to repair shops, helping keep equipment on the road and prevent engine shutdowns that can leave a truck stranded when the sensors fail.

Ongoing shortages of replacement parts for failed diesel exhaust fluid quality sensors are believed to be causing thousands of trucks nationwide to be disabled and parked.

Prices for the diesel exhaust fluid that is a vital component of emissions systems on newer trucks are rising as costs for urea — a core DEF ingredient — have jumped.
