Werner Enterprises is set to acquire privately owned dedicated truckload specialist FirstFleet and associated real estate for a combined $282.8 million.

The expansion of the fleet followed swiftly on the heels of the largest acquisition in Schneider’s 90-year history: the 2024 acquisition of dedicated truckload-focused Cowan Systems.

Averitt Express added dedicated tanker truck services to its logistics offerings for bourbon distilleries, expanding its long-standing role in supporting the industry.

“The reason you’ve seen spot rates up in the last couple of weeks — it’s been because of the enforcement activity,” said J.B. Hunt Chief Operating Officer Nick Hobbs.

Profit at Ryder System rose in the first quarter of 2025 as higher contract revenue outweighed ongoing weakness in the rental and used vehicle sales businesses.

While some segments of the logistics market saw expansion, such as dedicated carriage and freight forwarding, others faced slower growth, including freight brokerage and warehousing.

The Lowell, Ark.-based carrier ended the year slightly behind where it was during the prior fourth quarter amid efforts to reinvest and improve operations, the company reported Jan. 16.

Across the major logistics market segments, 2023 brought a spate of challenges including compressed margins, rising labor costs and inflationary pressures, ensuring a down year for many.

2023 was a generally downtrodden year for 3PLs, with plummeting transportation rates and shippers focused on right-sizing inventories and reducing logistics costs.

Most of North America’s largest for-hire carriers operating in many diverse segments of the trucking industry reported higher revenues last year.
