Volvo Group said Mack Trucks’ ongoing product refresh is moving toward completion in 2027, pointing to recent updates across the brand’s on-highway and vocational portfolio as part of a broader push to expand market share.

The refresh has included Mack’s launch of the Pioneer as its latest flagship Class 8 on-highway tractor in April 2025, along with updates to other on-highway and vocational models such as the new Keystone model and a revamped Granite.

And in presentations during Volvo Group’s 2026 Capital Markets Day, Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm and head of North American truck operations Stephen Roy exhibited confidence that the overhaul is reaping the intended rewards of the company’s investment in the brand.

Presentations by Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm and head of North American truck operations Stephen Roy at the event in Eskilstuna, Sweden, exhibited confidence that the overhaul is reaping the intended rewards of the company’s investment in the brand.

“We’ve got the core business going in the right direction, but there’s this longhaul segment that represents 43% of the heavy-duty industry in the U.S. and Canadian market, and we’ve not tapped that yet,” Roy said. “The good news is with the launch of our Pioneer and our all-new Anthem last year, we now have the trucks to do this.”

Mack’s North American market share by segment in 2025, according to Volvo Group:

  • Vocational: 13.7%
  • Regional Haul: 11%
  • Longhaul: 1.6%

Mack and its parent company hope the Pioneer — with a more aerodynamic shape than the legacy Anthem prior to its own revamp — will help revitalize their fortunes in the longhaul segment of the truck market.

The longhaul, on-highway slice of the North American truck market is what Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt in 2025 termed “in reality, an almost absent type of segment for Mack.”

“We need more customers to gain market share. We cannot build this with the customers that we have,” Alm told analysts and investors in Eskilstuna, the headquarters of Volvo Construction Equipment.

And that seems to have been the case. Some 45% of Pioneer sales and orders have been to new rather than existing customers, the company said.

“For me, that’s a really good indication that we’re going to hit it out of the park with our Pioneer and our Anthem,” Roy said.

Mack’s ambitions for the Pioneer and the other new or revamped models will be supported by the launch of a new 1.7 million-square-foot, $700 million manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico.

The Monterrey plant will build trucks for both Mack and sister company Volvo Trucks North America. Production lines at the plant are expected to begin rolling in July, VTNA President Peter Voorhoeve told Transport Topics in March.

VTNA’s share of the Monterrey plant’s output will be exported to the U.S. and Canada. Mack’s share will supply the Mexican and Latin American markets.

The expansion also will support plans to double Mack’s export business in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, according to the presentation.

Volvo Group added that Mack will focus on three key markets: Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

“These are really good, mature markets where you have strong fleets that are investing heavily in new technologies, sustainable technologies,” Roy told analysts and investors attending the 2026 Capital Markets Day.

Roy, who will be replaced by Wilson Lirmann in August, added: “This is an area that we’re really excited to return to. We used to have a very strong presence when it came to the export market. We’ve selected about 18 countries that we’re really focused on.”

Alongside those plans, Volvo Group has ambitions to win a 25% share of the North American heavy-duty truck market by 2030, which the parent company revealed at its last Capital Markets Day in Dublin, Va., in November 2024. VTNA is expected to contribute 15% of that total and Mack 10%.

VTNA captured a 9.1% share of U.S. Class 8 retail sales in 2025, while Mack held an 8.7% share, according to Omdia Automotive.

Roy said momentum built as 2025 progressed, telling analysts and investors: “If you look at the last half of the year, we ended up at 9.3% market share … we continue to see good momentum for market share [in 2026].”

In addition, the order book for the Keystone will open late in the third quarter of 2026. It replaces the Pinnacle model in Mack’s vocational lineup. The Pinnacle was introduced in 2006, replacing the Vision. The order book for the revamped Granite will open in the second half of 2026.
