Valvoline, Tech Firm tiwi Team to Boost Fleets’ Efficiency

GRAPEVINE, Texas — Lubricant maker Valvoline and technology firm tiwi have unveiled a program for over-the-road fleets that they guarantee will boost fuel efficiency by at least 4%.

The companies discussed the plan — which involves engine oil, gear lubricants and a telematics device that monitors truck performance — with reporters here Thursday.

While the companies refused to break down how the MPG gains are accomplished, officials said that if fleets don’t meet the 4% improvement, they will remove the equipment and refund the fleets’ investment.

The two are making the guarantee to combat “outlandish claims for fuel economy” made by some competitors, said John Noal, Valvoline’s vice president for international and commercial products.

Todd Follmer, tiwi’s CEO, said his company’s device cuts speeding by 86% and aggressive driving by 89%.
