U.S., Canada Border Crossing Facilities Look at Longer Hours to Aid Commerce

n efforts to speed border crossings at certain locations, U.S. and Canadian officials are extending service center hours for drivers applying for the Free and Secure Trade program. One U.S. official was also urging the Food and Drug Administration to add weekend inspectors.

In a letter to the FDA dated Feb. 2, and released publicly Feb. 14, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer requested that federal inspectors work weekend hours at the Peace Bridge between Buffalo, N.Y., and Fort Erie, Ontario.

Spitzer said the limited hours FDA inspectors currently worked at the Peace Bridge put New York at a competitive disadvantage over major crossings in Michigan that have “more convenient hours."
