everal key U.S. trucking industry suppliers intend to seek Environmental Protection Agency approval later this month for a urea-based pollution control system they believe will most efficiently meet tightened federal emissions regulations.

The suppliers — including truck makers Freightliner and Volvo — want to assure EPA that the infrastructure necessary to support the technology would all be in place in time to meet tightened federal emissions rules by late 2007.

“Every step is critical now,” said Anthony Greszler, vice president of engineering at Volvo Powertrain Corp. “We’re running out of time that we need to make engines available for testing in 2005, and we need to decide on an emissions technology soon, ” he said in an interview with Transport Topics Sept. 4.
