UPS, FedEx Suspend Some Japan Service Due to Earthquake

Volvo, Nissan Assess Damage from Quake, Tsunami

UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp. suspended package-delivery service in and around Tokyo because of Japan’s earthquake Friday, while several truck and auto makers scrambled to assess the damage in that country, Bloomberg reported.

Friday’s 8.9 scale earthquake and subsequent tsunami temporarily closed Narita International Airport, prompting FedEx to cancel three flights from Japan, Bloomberg reported.

UPS also canceled some flights out of Japan and rerouted one freighter that normally flies a Shanghai-Tokyo-U.S. route through Osaka instead, Bloomberg reported, citing a company spokeswoman.

Meanwhile, truck maker Volvo AB said its four production facilities in Japan operated by subsidiary UD Trucks were likely to stay closed for at least a week while local staff assesses damage.

All of Volvo’s 9,500 employees in Japan appeared to be unharmed, a spokeswoman told Bloomberg.

Automaker Nissan Motor Co. said about 2,300 new vehicles were damaged by tsunami surges in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami, and reported minor damage to four factories and two offices, Bloomberg said.
