rivers seeking a hazardous materials endorsement would pay $94 for background checks in the 34 states using the Transportation Security Administration’s designated contractor, the agency said last week.

The Jan. 13 Federal Register notice was the final step TSA needed to take before implementing the checks, an agency spokeswoman said.

“This is the final rule. All systems are go for Jan. 31,” said TSA spokeswoman Deirdre O’Sullivan.



Trucking industry officials expressed dismay with the agency over the fee and TSA’s approach to checking the backgrounds of hazmat drivers.
