Transportation Research Board Official Sees Little Support From Congress

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>WASHINGTON — The head of one of the nation’s largest trucking companies said increasing truck size and weight should be the industry’s biggest priority when Congress takes up its new highway spending plan this year.

"The amount of freight is going to double in the next 20 years, so unless we double the amount of highways and trucks, we have to increase productivity," Michael W. Wickham, chief executive officer of Roadway Corp. of Akron, Ohio, said.

But one of the authors of a Transportation Research Board study that last year called for increases in federal truck size and weight limits said he was not sure there was anyone in Congress who would support bigger trucks.
