Iowa-based flatbed carrier TMC Transportation is consolidating its southeastern U.S. presence via a $38 million investment in its South Carolina operations that is slated to create jobs for the region.

Employee-owned TMC Transportation has a 25-year history in South Carolina. Headquartered in Des Moines, the company maintains a network of terminals and service centers throughout the U.S. Under this project, it will consolidate its three leased facilities in central South Carolina into a single 44-acre campus at 2716 Shop Road in Columbia. TMC Transportation will build a 36,000-square-foot operations and logistics office as well as a 66,000-square-foot maintenance facility next to its existing driver training center in Richland County.

TMC Transportation is ranked No. 76 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America.

“With two-thirds of the U.S. population within a two-day drive of South Carolina, this is the ideal place for trucking companies to thrive,” Gov. Henry McMaster said Dec. 5. “We look forward to seeing TMC Transportation continue to develop and build on its rich history in South Carolina.”

Jason Webb, TMC’s executive vice president of asset management, told Transport Topics that the new campus will consolidate the company’s existing terminal with operations, logistics, maintenance, the driver training center and asset sales in one state-of-the-art campus.

“This will not only create efficiencies and improve coordination and communication in our business operations, but it will help us provide a better experience for office employees, drivers and customers,” Webb said. “With the new campus, we will be able to combine all of our operations to reach customers throughout the Southeast, provide better service to our drivers, train new drivers in our industry-leading driver training center and grow our business."

Webb said South Carolina offers a great central location geographically and that the company has a long-standing partnership with both Richland County and the state.

“The 185 positions we will need to fill are operations and maintenance roles, in functions like fleet management, human resources, driver training, safety, IT, customer service, truck maintenance and logistics. As we grow our operations in the area, we will also continue to hire drivers in South Carolina, as well as across the eastern half of the U.S., to meet our customers’ needs and expand our business,” Webb said.

He added that the company has experienced tremendous growth since it established a foothold in the Columbia area in 1998.

“We’re excited to bring all of our operations into one location so that we can continue to offer our customers the best-in-class service they’ve come to expect from us, help our drivers succeed on the road, and strengthen the local economy and supply chain,” Webb said.
