ew emission regulations and the effect of the Internet and wireless systems on the trucking industry will be the main focus of the Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual meeting next week in Tampa, Fla.

Robert Braswell, technical director of TMC, said the upcoming regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency that go into effect Jan. 1 top the list of industry concerns. Heavy-duty truck engines built on or after Jan. 1, 2007, will need to cut nitrogen-oxide emissions in half and slash levels of particulate matter, or soot, by 90% to 0.01 grams per brake-horsepower hour.

The Feb. 14-17 meeting will feature more than 90 technical sessions, including one on electronic onboard recorders, said TMC, a unit of American Trucking Associations. Rules governing the use of EOBRs are expected in late spring from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. (Click here for previous coverage.)
