Stemco Sees $30 Million Rear Trailer-Drag Market

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Stemco executive said here that the company’s recently announced acquisition of ATDynamics was a good fit for the company.

“It’s a growing market, [about] $30 million for rear-dragging [trailer products] in North America,” said Bob Montgomery, vice president for intelligent transportation systems. ATD makes a ‘TrailerTail’ product that pops out from the back of a trailer when running to improve aerodynamics.

“Based on my research, ATDynamics is the 900-pound gorilla in that field,” Montgomery told Transport Topics after the company’s press conference at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual meeting.

Stemco sells parts that  generally are nondiscretionary, such as seals, bearings and brake products, while Montgomery’s group within the company sells things that are discretionary, such as tire-pressure monitors and automatic tire inflation, he said.

The products it sells “are about saving fleets fuel, saving them tires and increasing safety . . . optional products that will make their bottom line grow,” Montgomery said.
