Specter of Inflation Continues to Spook the Federal Reserve

Trucking and transportation are a good, small example of why Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is worried about the economy at large.

The nation’s central bank stepped up its campaign against inflation May 16 in spite of recent government statistics showing that prices have moderated, both for the economy in general and the transportation sector specifically.

Greenspan and his colleagues at the Fed are worried that inflation is still a danger and that the recent good reports are but an aberration. Therefore, the monetary authorities are trying to hobble modestly rising prices before they become truly menacing.
