The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on Dec. 9 approved the nomination of Mark Rosekind to become administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Senate consideration of his nomination is expected before Congress adjourns this month.

If confirmed, Rosekind would manage the agency’s response to General Motors’ defective ignition switches and reports of unsafe Takata airbags, among other issues. He would succeed David Friedman in his role as acting administrator.

Rosekind, nominated Nov. 19, has been a member of the National Transportation Safety Board since 2010. He is an expert on driver fatigue.

The committee also approved the nominations of Dr. Tho Bella Dinh-Zarr to be a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, and Carlos Monje Jr., to be assistant secretary for Transportation Policy at DOT.
