Nebraska Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will oversee a hearing in her home state on May 2 about the implementation of a five-year highway law that augmented grants for freight projects.

The hearing will aim to gauge the effects the highway law, known as the FAST Act, is having on freight transportation and rural economies.

Fischer, chairwoman of a subcommittee that oversees trucking affairs, has called on local leaders to share perspective. These include Kyle Schneweis, director of the Nebraska Department of Roads; Deb Cottier, executive director of the Northwest Nebraska Development Corp.; and Brent Holliday, CEO of the Nebraska Transport Co.

Enacted in December, the FAST Act established a freight program to back infrastructure projects meant to improve the flow of freight, and it paved the way for the use of hair testing as a pre-employment alternative to urinalysis.
