Ocean carrier Tote and ship builder Nassco announced they have launched a second alternative fuel-powered vessel as efforts advance to put the first two liquefied natural gas containerships into service.

Tote, or Totem Ocean Trailer Express, is deploying the vessels in the trade between the United States and Puerto Rico through its Sea Star Line business.

The Isla Bella is slated to enter service later this year, followed by the Perla del Caribe in 2016.

Nassco, or National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., constructed the vessels in San Diego. Nassco is part of General Dynamics Co.

“These ships and the technology they employ will redefine what is possible in the shipping industry both here in the United States and abroad,” Sea Star Line President Tim Nolan said.

Tote is part of Saltchuk, a Seattle-based firm that also operates trucking and airfreight businesses. The companies said the new vessels will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 98%, sulfur dioxide emissions by 97% and also lower carbon dioxide and particulate matter compared with ships on the route between Florida and Puerto Rico.
