Schneider National Inc. said it is launching a new company owned and managed fleet of intermodal freight chassis.

The fleet will help solve the problem of the lack of access to quality chassis when and where shippers need them, Schneider said in a Dec. 16 statement.

“Establishing a company-owned chassis fleet gives Schneider complete control of assets used in an intermodal move and makes our service even more efficient for shippers,” Bill Matheson, president of intermodal services, said in the statement. “Only a handful of transportation companies have invested in their own chassis fleets.”

The fleet will improve availability and reliability of chassis compared with using shared chassis pools, Schneider said. It will bring the company closer to providing “truck-like” service for intermodal operations.

Schneider has started converting its intermodal operation to the company-owned chassis fleet model, a process it said will take two years. The fleet will include 600 chassis it received in October.
