Schneider is increasing its driver instructor workforce by 26% to expand onboarding and behind-the-wheel training for new and experienced drivers.

The additional instructor positions will be distributed across the carrier’s nationwide training network. Schneider said the expansion will enable more new hires to move from onboarding into practical driving instruction while maintaining the quality of its training program.

“Drivers are essential to keeping the economy moving, and developing the next generation of drivers requires a commitment to helping them succeed,” Schneider Vice President of Safety Andrea Sequin said. “By adding more instructors, we’re expanding our ability to train and mentor drivers, which helps us deliver the reliable service our customers expect. Consistent capacity helps sustain the long-term strength of our network.”

Driver instructors provide hands-on training, coaching and behind-the-wheel experience designed to prepare new hires for professional driving careers.

The added positions also will create advancement opportunities for experienced drivers interested in training and mentoring newer operators. Nearly 90% of Green Bay, Wis.-based Schneider’s current driver instructors were promoted from driving roles, the company said.

“Experienced drivers often look for ways to share their knowledge with newer drivers, and our driver instructor position allows them to do just that,” Sequin said. “Plus, the role gets them home every day, which is something experienced drivers often desire when considering a job change.”

The expanded instructor team will support Schneider’s network of about 14,000 company drivers. The company did not say how many instructor positions it plans to add.
