Schneider National said it is installing tracking technology on its intermodal containers and van trailers.

The Trailer Tracks 210 devices sold by Omnitracs, formerly known as Qualcomm Enterprise Services, will provide real-time location and load status and add supply chain efficiencies, Schneider said.

The devices upgrade technology already in the company’s truckload and dedicated fleets but are the first to be installed in its intermodal containers, according to Schneider, which is installing the technology on more than 44,000 containers and trailers.

Schneider said it was previously difficult to power a tracking device on intermodal containers because they not tethered to a tractor for significant periods of time. The new devices use solar and cellular power enabling for intermodal container tracking and load sensing for the first time.

“This investment, along with consistent rail improvements and our asset-based service, is creating an even more ‘truck-like’ experience for Schneider Intermodal’s customers,” Jim Filter, Schneider’s senior vice president of intermodal commercial management, said in a statement.

All of Schneider’s intermodal containers will be equipped with tracking devices by the end of September, and the van trailer fleet upgrade will be complete by December 2015, the company said.

Schneider National is ranked No. 6 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
