S.C. to Use Sensors to Monitor Bridges

Remote sensors will be installed on bridges on two main South Carolina highways, allowing officials in Columbia to monitor the bridges’ condition, the Associated Press reported.

The sensors, which use cell-phone technology, will be installed on the U.S. 378 bridge over the Pee Dee River and on the Santee River bridges on U.S. 17 on the coast, AP reported.

The sensors will be able to detect changes in voltage correlating to strain on the bridges and if successful, it could be installed on other bridges, AP said.

The bridges where the sensors are being installed are considered structurally deficient but not dangerous, although the U.S. 378 bridge is scheduled for replacement, AP reported.
