Ronald Round has been named Bendix Grand Champion at American Trucking Associations’ National Battle of the States: Virtual Truck Driving Championships.

A professional driver with Pottle’s Transportation, Round has 33 years of experience in the trucking industry and has logged about 2.7 million accident-free miles. Pottle’s Transportation is based outside of Bangor, Maine.

This marks Round’s first national virtual trucking title. He has won top honors twice at the Maine Truck Driving Championships.

Todd Flippin, a FedEx Freight driver from Colorado, took second place, while James Kohr, a FedEx Express driver representing New York, placed third. They were among 166 drivers who competed in the event.

The Battle of the States, held between July 31-Aug. 14, involved state competitions, prize rounds and the grand championship.

Our industry is full of champions … and it is a privilege to recognize Ron as this year's champion.

The event was held as a virtual version of the National Truck Driving Championships and National Step Van Driving Championships, which were canceled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19. In its in-person form, NTDC, nicknamed the “Super Bowl of Safety,” challenges drivers with a written test, a pre-trip inspection and a driving skills course.

“Our industry is full of champions, as we saw with the tremendous participation in this year’s virtual truck driving championships, and it is a privilege to recognize Ron as this year’s grand champion,” ATA President Chris Spear said. “We look forward to seeing these drivers resume competition next year in Indianapolis at the 2022 National Truck Driving Championships.”

The Battle of the States began July 31 with state-level trivia contests. Questions were based on Facts for Drivers, federal and state laws, and state trucking history and culture. Facts for Drivers is the rulebook that NTDC’s written test contains questions about.

The grand championship was held Aug. 14. This competition also involved a trivia session with questions coming from Facts for Drivers, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and trucking culture.
