Peterbilt Takes Wraps Off 387 Model

Peterbilt describes the 387, which replaces the 377A/E, as a “premium, on-highway aerodynamic conventional truck” that it hopes will appeal to fleet operators and owner-operators.
Todd Acker, manager of public relations, said the 387 represents a more viable product to compete in the “aero” market, which accounts for about 65% of the Class 8 market. In 1998, Peterbilt commanded about 9% of the Class 8 vehicle sales, putting it in fifth place among the seven major truck manufacturers.
Other competitors in that niche include Freightliner’s Century Class and Volvo’s VN.
Acker said that Peterbilt continued to customized trucks for buyers but acknowledged the industry trend toward offering such service as less of an option.
