Peoples Services Acquires Grimes Cos. to Expand in Southeast

Peoples Services Inc., a logistics firm based in Canton, Ohio, acquired the assets of The Grimes Cos. in Jacksonville, Fla., a move that substantially expands the company’s warehousing and distribution services in the southeastern United States.

Grimes operates five business units, providing warehousing, product packaging, regional trucking, freight brokerage and staffing services.

The combined businesses will operate more than 7.5 million square feet of public and contract warehouse space with 42 locations in seven states. Grimes Trucking Services operates a fleet of 83 tractors and 194 trailers, according to registration data filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Peoples Services ranks No. 18 on the list of the top refrigerated warehousing firms for the Transport Topics Top 50 Logistics Companies in North America and No. 58 on the list of the top dedicated contract carriers in North America.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Grimes businesses will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Peoples Services as Grimes Total Distribution, according to a company statement April 16.

Peoples Services CEO Doug Sibila said the addition of seven locations and more than 100 employees from Grimes will expand the company’s footprint in the Southeast and provide improved service and flexibility for Grimes customers.

Grimes was founded in 1972, and its president, Neil Porter, retired at the end of March. He was succeeded by Executive Vice President Ike Sherlock.
