Norfolk Southern’s 2Q Income Improves

Eastern freight railroad Norfolk Southern Corp. said Wednesday its second-quarter earnings grew 5% to $394 million or 98 cents a share, from $375 million or 89 cents a year ago.

Income from railway operations rose 2% to $690 million, a second-quarter record.

Revenue dipped to $2.38 billion from $2.39 billion, the company said in a statement.

Intermodal revenue declined 4% to $479 million compared with a year ago.

General merchandise revenue rose 1% to $1.32 billion, as higher revenue per unit offset a decline in volume.
