NHTSA Recall Cites Peterbilt Trucks’ Tire-Pressure Labels

Paccar Inc. will send new tire and rim labels to owners of a range of its truck models due to potential issues with incorrect tire-pressure notifications on tire and rim labels, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

More than 240,000 vehicles are potentially affected, NHTSA said in a recall notice dated March 6 and released by the Department of Transportation agency March 20.

Affected vehicles “may be equipped with tire and rim certification labels that list a tire pressure below the actual correct amount,” the notice said. “As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120.”

If the tires are underinflated due to the incorrect inflation pressure listed on the label, the truck may not be able to carry its maximum gross vehicle weight rating without experiencing tire failure, which would increase the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.

The models include Peterbilt models 357, 365, 367, 378, 379, 382, 385, 387, 388, 389, 567, 579 and 587 that were built in model years 2006 through 2016.

The agency said Peterbilt will notify owners and mail them a corrected tire and rim certification label, free of charge, though it has not yet provided a notification schedule. Paccar’s number for this recall is 215-D.
