Navistar Says 13-Liter Engine Will Meet Emissions Standards

LISLE, Ill. — Navistar Inc. has submitted a 13-liter engine for federal certification that its sales chief says will meet U.S. emissions standards.

James Hebe said that the engine was formally presented to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday and that the company was prepared to begin producing the engine for sale as soon as it’s certified as compliant.

He said the new engine would do something “that's never been done in the world”: meet the 2010 federal emissions standard without having to add urea to the exhaust system.

Hebe, Navistar’s senior vice president of North American sales, said the company was asking EPA to allow it the same flexibility in meeting the standard, such as allowing the engine to exceed the standard until it reaches operating temperature.

Up to now, Navistar has been using credits it earned in previous years for exceeding federal pollution standards to allow its current heavy-duty engines to exceed current emissions standards.
