Navistar International Corp. and General Motors Co. have reached a long-term agreement to develop and manufacture Classes 4-5 medium-duty conventional trucks with a goal of starting sales in 2018.

The companies said in a Sept. 30 joint statement the trucks will be assembled at Navistar’s Springfield, Ohio, plant and be powered by General Motors engines. The venture calls for $12 million in investment and 300 jobs.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The companies said the appeal of the deal is that Navistar would strengthen its product lineup and GM would expand its Chevrolet commercial truck portfolio.

In addition to heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, Navistar historically has been strong in Classes 6-7 medium-duty sales. The Lisle, Illinois-based manufacturer also makes Classes 4-5 TerraStar trucks, but the company sells fewer of those.

Executives from both companies will host a press conference Sept. 30.
