In Maine, Susan Collins vs. Shenna Bellows: Why You Should Care

Each day this week, three times per day, Transport Topics reporter Eugene Mulero looks at one of 15 key congressional races that affect transportation interests, and explains Why You Should Care.

Today: Maine's Senate race – Republican incumbent Susan Collins vs. Democratic challenger Shenna Bellows.

In the Senate, Susan Collins has led the push to suspend for a year the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new hours-of-service rule. As the top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, she also has worked with Democrats to approve funding for emergency transportation projects and helped craft legislation to authorize funding for the Department of Transportation’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program. Collins’ Democratic challenger, Shenna Bellows, is the former executive of the Maine Civil Liberties Union. Bellows has indicated that transportation “is key for the growth of healthy business, and to that end, we need to invest in roads, bridges, rail and a modern public transportation system.” The nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report classified the Collins-Bellows contest “currently safe Republican.”
