Josh Owen, the president of Ability-Tri-Modal Transportation Services, died June 1 in his sleep. He was 43.

Ability Tri-Modal, based in Carson, California, is a family-owned trucking company. Bill Owen founded the Owen family of companies in 1947, and Josh’s father, Greg, started Tri-Modal Distribution Services in 1982.

Josh Owen was active with American Trucking Associations, serving on the board of directors, the homeland security policy committee and the communications and image policy committee. He also served on the independent contractor task force and was involved with the LEAD ATA program.

ATA President Bill Graves called Owen a “dear friend and colleague” and said he will be remembered for his love of the trucking industry, his commitment to and philanthropic support of his community, his leadership and overall passion and dedication for everything he was involved in.

“The loss of our beloved one is incredibly shocking and difficult; however, the outpouring from family, friends, Long Beach, including those from the Westerly community, is giving us tremendous comfort. Josh passionately loved his wife, children, friends, family and Long Beach. He will live in our hearts forever,” the family said in a statement.

Owen is survived by his mother and father, Val and Greg Owen; wife Tessa; and a son and daughter.

“Josh, we will miss you more than you will ever know. You led us with passion, vision and integrity. A beloved father and son, devoted to making a positive impact in every life you touched. The light that shines from within you will continue to guide us, now and forever,” Ability-Tri-Modal said on Facebook.

Owen earned a bachelor’s degree at San Francisco State University and a master’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was active in the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as well as the Rotary Club of Long Beach.
