Intermodal Rail Volume Rises for 19th Straight Week

Intermodal rail volume for the week ended Nov. 9 rose 6.3% from the same period last year, the 19th consecutive rise, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Traffic increased to 265,259 trailers and containers, AAR said in its weekly report.

Rail carload traffic rose 4.9% to 297,581 year-over-year, the rail trade group said.

Eight of the 10 carload commodity groups tracked by AAR posted increases, led by petroleum and petroleum products, which increased 25% to 14,400 carloads. Commodities showing a decrease included coal, which fell 0.6%.



For the first 45 weeks of the year, U.S. railroads moved 11.1 million intermodal containers and trailers, up 4.1% from last year. Carload traffic dipped 0.5% to 12.7 million units.

Total North American rail volume year-to-date for the 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads increased 0.3% from the same point last year to 17 million carloads.
