Intermodal Rail Traffic Rises 5.2% in 2014

U.S. rail intermodal traffic increased 5.2% in 2014 from the prior year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Railroads moved 13.5 million intermodal trailers and containers last year, AAR said Dec. 31 in its weekly report.

Full-year rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, increased 3.9% to 15.2 million carloads.

Year to date, intermodal volume for all of North America increased 5.4% to 17 million trailers and containers.



Intermodal traffic for the week ended Dec. 27 increased 5.4% to 273,695, compared with the same week last year, according to AAR.

Rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, increased 9.2% year-over-year to 252,100 carloads.

Nine of the 10 commodity groups AAR tracks increased over last year, led by motor vehicles and parts at 41.6%.
