Intermodal Rail Traffic Declines for Second Consecutive Week

U.S. rail intermodal traffic fell for the second straight week, declining 0.1% in the week ended Feb. 14 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Railroads moved 236,265 intermodal trailers and containers, AAR said Feb. 18 in its weekly report. The dip follows a 3.3% drop the prior week.

Rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, increased 6.7% year-over-year to 288,959 carloads.

All 10 commodity groups AAR tracks increased over last year, led by grain at 21.5%.



Intermodal volume for all of North America increased 1.9% to 307,410 trailers and containers.

Canadian railroads moved 60,512 intermodal units, a 9.5% increase. Mexican rail moved 10,633 units, an 8.2% rise from the same time last year.

Year-to-date U.S. intermodal was flat compared with the same period last year at 1.48 million units.
