This week is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week, during which enforcement agencies around the country will work to educate drivers and technicians about proper brake maintenance and conduct brake inspections.

More than 50% of commercial motor vehicle out-of-service violations cited in roadside inspections are for brake-related violations, according to CVSA’s Roadcheck 2011 data.

Brake Safety Week runs through Saturday. CVSA represents law enforcement personnel who conduct truck safety inspections in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Ultimately, brakes are a major factor in being able to operate a commercial vehicle safely, yet they continue to be cited as one of the leading factors in crashes due to defects and improper maintenance and adjustment,” said CVSA Executive Director Stephen Keppler.

“One of the major goals of Brake Safety Week is to educate drivers, mechanics and others on the importance of proper adjustment, maintenance, and operation to ensure every commercial vehicle is operating safely, and, ultimately, to save lives,” he said in a statement.

In West Virginia, the state’s Public Service Commission is conducting safety inspections of as part of national Brake Safety Week, the Associated Press reported.

The commission’s transportation enforcement division is conducting brake inspections at weigh stations on eastbound Interstate 64 near Winfield, on Interstate 77 north and south in Mineral Wells, and along Interstate 79 north and south in Fairmont, AP reported.
