ith the peak season for freight shipping rapidly approaching, U.S. railroads are already stretched thin and it appears that more delays and capacity scarcities are looming.

The nation’s largest railroad, Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific, warned in a recent letter to its customers that it may have to limit carloadings and shift some freight to other modes of transport.

Limiting carloads could mean asking customers to ship less freight or to switch freight to trucks, UP spokesman Mark Davis said July 13.

“[I]n some cases alternative methods of shipment will be a challenge, given the huge demand and strain on all forms of freight transportation today,” Jack Koraleski, UP’s executive vice president for marketing and sales, said in a July 8 letter to customers posted on its Web site.
