Holiday Weekend Driving to Rise Slightly, AAA Says
The number of Americans driving during Memorial Day weekend will rise slightly, according to AAA.
The number of automobile trips will increase by 1.3% to 31.8 million, according to the motorist group. About 88% of all travelers will drive to their destination, AAA said.
An estimated 36.1 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home, a 1.5% rise from last year, AAA said.
“The winter blues appear to have given Americans the travel bug and a case of cruise cabin fever as travel for the holiday is expected to hit a new post-recession high,” Brad Roeber, AAA Chicago regional president, said in a statement.
Total travel is expected to rise to the second-highest volume since 2000.
